Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past month or so, then you know that Motorola has been steadily putting out ICS leaks for the Droid RAZR, Droid 4 and more recently Droid Bionic.
Due to kernel changes and handling of the capacitive keys, I decided it was time to do a few Safestrap updates!
So the following are newly released Safestrap versions to be run only after installing an ICS leak/OTA from Motorola:
- (XT912 ONLY) RAZR :: v2.00 [ 2012-05-20 ] md5sum: 1ab13e27f2225d490cb497d215269363
- Droid 4 :: v2.00 [ 2012-06-02 ] md5sum: 2de0c1331c8bcaf256c462cbf1ca3255
- Bionic :: v2.00 [ 2012-06-22 ] md5sum: a44fe2555423f9fb74042ad9c10cff94
What’s New?
- Code base updated to Koush’s CWRecovery 5.5.0.4 (from 5.0.2.6 previously)
- Added handling for the front-side capacitive buttons (home, menu, back, search) using a modified version of Nathan Grebowiec’s touch source. (For Droid 4 and Droid Bionic — RAZR didn’t have this problem)
- All devices were updated to correctly load stock-based and custom ROMs in Safe System using the new init files.
Make sure the FIRST thing you do after performing the Motorola update is go back into the new Safestrap and do a non-safe backup for restoring later should you need to.
Enjoy and play it safe!
Motorola is putting out the leaks? So they’re like dev builds then pretty much?
I’ve got a stock D4, should I ICS it, then root and safestrap, or safestrap in gingerbread, then put ICS on it?
if you are going to use 1.09 of safestrap, you are fine to do it before going to ICS. If you are going to use 2.0 version, flash ICS first. With my razr, we had an issue getting back to GB from ICS, so we used 1.09 ( I think is how it went). Wait, I remember having to flash a certain leak of ICS …. THEN…. safestrap, because that version of the ICS leak was fastbootable back to GB for the OTA update. The conclusion I have come to is safestrap is for after ICS really… otherwise, I’m not seeing the point.
What I understand, the “unsafe” side is your base/kernel/etc so…..if you plan on ultimately running ICS on the “safe side”, then you need to have ICS as a base on your “un-safe side”. As I am unfamiliar with the D4, I guess it depends on whether or not you are flashing “leaks”, or if you have a certified OTA ICS. If you do, just upgrade and don’t look back. Then simply use the “safe side” to flash 3rd party roms with your OTA residing on your “non-safe side” for a fail safe.
That is the way I understand it and I really hope it helps. I just got my RAZR sunday so this safestrap thing is new to me. Last I heard, CWM was the new sliced bread :D GL and I really hoped this helped / you remembered to come back and check these comments, considering you couldn’t be bothered to post in a forum. G’night.
Ps. LMK how it goes for ya
I should have added, that, if you are on “leaks”, and need to get back to GB to catch the OTA, then stick with 1.09
I went back to stock 902, upgraded to 905, then did ICS leak. I installed Safestrap 2 for the Bionic (my phone being a Bionic). Can get into the menu, backup, etc…but when I toggle to SafeMode and then just try to boot up, screen goes black after Safestrap splash screen, sits there. Does nothing. With a reboot, return to Unsafe, it boots up just fine. Any clue what’s going on?
Damon,
I ran into the same issue. Did you get it to work so that you had ICS and a ROM both booting normally?
You need to install a rom on the safe side. Hold down both volume and power until it flickers, then release and hold power. Boot into SS and install the rom.
So, I’ve installed the .211 from Matt’s utility 1.7 and installed Safestrap 2.0. If I make a backup of the non-safe side (stock ICS .211) then enable safe mode I then tried to restore my non-safe backup to the safe side to save time and since there were no roms i wanted to install at this time. But, it doesn’t work, screen just goes black after MOTO boot screen, even full wipe etc. Should this work? I would have just downloaded hash’s .211 ROM but the link was dead but still thought this should work. I since then found a .211 flashable rom which worked fine but was wondering about the above.
thanks
Awesome, just…awesome! Thanks for all the hard work. Safestrap is a great alternative, make me a lot more, shall we say, comfortable flashing ROMs. CM9 is running great, except for 3g/4g problem everyone else is having. Thanks again!
Hey, love the work you guys do.
I have one question though. Is there a reason why you can only backup the safe and non-safe sides to the internal memory? It would be nice to have the choice of using either internal or external memory for this, just like when you do a nandroid backup.
Any possibility of this option showing up in a later version?
Thanks!
Everytime I try to load Safestrap I get “There is a problem parsing the package” Does any one have any ideas?
